Crowns

What Is A Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” that is placed over a tooth, covering it to restore its shape and size, strength, and improve its appearance. It is cemented into place, fully encasing the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line.

Tooth crowns are one of the most effective dental solutions for restoring a tooth’s shape, size and strength, or to improve its appearance. Your dentist might recommend teeth crowns to:

✓   Cover discolored teeth or dental implants

✓   Protect and cover a weakened tooth

✓   Restore a broken tooth

✓   Hold a dental bridge in place

How Does It Work?

While inlays and onlays cover the chewing surface of the tooth and fillings fill in the empty interior space of the tooth, crowns completely cover every visible part of the tooth – which is why they are sometimes referred to as “caps.” A part of your tooth remains but is essentially “rebuilt” to resemble the tooth at its exterior best.

Dental crowns are made from a variety of dental materials, including resins, metals, zirconia, ceramic and porcelain. While porcelain crowns certainly can improve the look of a tooth or multiple teeth, it is recommended only in conjunction with prior repair of the tooth – not simply for cosmetic purposes.

What Exactly Is It Used For?

Large failing fillings, tooth decay, grinding your teeth can all be contributing factors in the wearing down, cracking or breakage of your teeth. When this situation occurs, it is no longer feasible to place more filling material. A crown can make your tooth stronger and improve its appearance.

It can cover and support a tooth (with a large filling) when there isn’t enough tooth left. It can be used to attach a bridge, protect a weak tooth from breaking or restore one that’s developed a crack. A crown is also a good way to cover teeth that are discolored or badly shaped. It’s also used to cover a dental implant.
