Air Abrasion Fillings

What Is Air Abrasion?

Air abrasion is a drill-less technique that is now being used by modern dentists to remove tooth decay and for other applications.

When most people think of the dentist, they imagine the sound of a drill. However patients who feel some level of dental anxiety at the thought of a traditional drill may be pleasantly surprised to discover that air abrasion is an alternative to drills and is available for many dental procedures here in our office.

How Does It Work?

Air abrasion is a new method for removing tooth decay which uses tiny particles of aluminum oxide or silica. Imagine a miniature sandblaster gently wearing away the decayed material without the friction of a drill. Your dentist uses compressed air to spray a stream of the sand-like particles at the site of the affected tooth while an assistant generally suctions away the excess. Because air abrasion, or microabrasion, is most commonly used to prepare a tooth for a tooth filling, it is also often referred to as kinetic cavity preparation.

During air abrasion, an instrument that works like a mini sandblaster is used to spray away decay. During air abrasion, a fine stream of particles is aimed at the decayed portion of the tooth. These particles are made of silica, aluminum oxide, or a baking soda mixture and are propelled toward the tooth surface by compressed air or a gas that runs through the dental handpiece. Small particles of decay on the tooth surface are removed as the stream of particles strikes them. The particles of decay are then “suctioned” away through a thin tube.
